Blank frame(s) when switching uri with gtkpaintablesink

I have a Gstreamer application that recently upgraded from an older version of Gstreamer and GTK3. With our old version (where the video sink was connected to a gtk::DrawingArea widget), changing between video streams was “seamless”. It likely wasn’t truly seamless, but the final rendered frame was held while the new video was loading and created a passable illusion. For local, hardware-accelerated media, the extra frames were imperceptible.

Using the new gtk4paintablesink, switching between video streams results in a short, 1-4 frame black screen on the widget. Is there a simple way to alter this behavior? I saw this thread about cross-fading between videos, but that seems like lots of overhead for a relatively small problem.

Thanks for any tips or ideas you can provide!
